30 IPHES and URV members are working these days at the excavations of Atapuerca

70 people will participate in the Atapuerca excavation during the first 15 days and in July the team will increase until approximately 200 members

A team integrated by 70 people has initiated this week the archaeological excavation season in the deposits of Atapuerca (Burgos), which this year will last for a month and a half 30 people are IPHES (Institut Català de Paleoecologia Humana i Evolució Social) and URV (Universitat Rovira i Virgili de Tarragona) members. In July, the Equipo de Investigación de Atapuerca will reach to 200 people in the different excavated sites. The team works under the codirection of Eudald Carbonell, José Maria Bermúdez de Castro and Juan Luis Arsuaga.

The excavation will involve the deposits from Sima del Elefante, Galería, Gran Dolina, Cueva del Mirador, Fuente Mudarra, Portalón de Cueva Mayor, Sima de los Huesos and Galería de las Estatuas.

Most of the researchers who excavate in the Atapuerca sites come from different research centers belonging to the Atapuerca Project: Universidad de Burgos (UBU), Centro Nacional de Investigación sobre la Evolución Humana de Burgos (CENIEH), Institut Català de Paleoecologia Humana i Evolució Social (IPHES – Tarragona), Centro de Evolución y Comportamiento Humanos (Universidad Complutense de Madrid – ISCIII) and Universidad de Zaragoza (UNIZAR). Furthermore, there are participants coming from other universities and national and international research centers.
